Iranian woman Mahsa Amini's death sparks global outrage

Demonstrations erupt across Iran after Amini dies in custody

U.N. human rights experts condemn Iranian authorities for use of excessive force

On September 16, 2022, 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini died in a hospital in Tehran after being arrested by the country's morality police for allegedly violating the country's strict dress code. Amini's death has sparked widespread protests across Iran, with demonstrators calling for an end to the country's oppressive regime.

The Iranian authorities have responded to the protests with a heavy-handed crackdown, using tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition to disperse crowds. Amnesty International has reported that at least 82 people have been killed in the protests, including children. Hundreds more have been arrested.

The United Nations has condemned the Iranian authorities' use of excessive force against protesters. A U.N. fact-finding mission has concluded that Iran is responsible for the physical violence that led to Amini's death. The mission also found that Iranian security forces have committed serious human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and extrajudicial executions.

The international community must continue to pressure the Iranian authorities to end their crackdown on dissent. The Iranian people deserve to live in a free and just society, where their human rights are respected.
